Hero Layout Q: What is the Feature layout image size? A: The featured image for the Feature layout is 642 × 362 pixels. Q: What are the Newspaper layout image sizes? A: The center image for the Newspaper layout is 626 × 418 pixels. Thumbnails in the left column are 282 × 188 pixels, while thumbnails in the right column are 66 × 66 pixels (an aspect ratio of 1:1).
The link for "welcome page" in the question "Q: What is the cover image size?" goes to a website openintel.ca? Hope I didn't just send myself a virus...
Fixed. OPENINTEL dot CA was a domain that I used to own for another Substack publication until I realized I didn't really need it (the domain, I mean!). Thank you so much for letting me know.
Unfortunately, this is a known quirk of Substack's mobile layout. It happens because in mobile view, the nav bar compresses, and the "Subscribe" button is positioned at the top. Since the wordmark is in the center of this bar If the wordmark is too tall or otherwise doesn’t scale properly, it'll overlap with the button. Fortunately, there are couple of solutions you can try.
First, you can try resizing and cropping your wordmark. Try resizing its height to between 100-150 px. I'm not sure if width will have an impact; you'll have to test that.
Second, you can test the aspect ratio. I've heard that 6:1 or 7:1 is the ratio to aim for on mobile, but I haven't run into this issue myself (yet) so I haven't had reason to test for it. You'll have to check it through mobile preview, so it might be a bit tedious.
Lastly, you can try removing any background transparency your image might have. Depending on the browser, this can sometimes help.
Please let me know if any of these suggestions worked!
If I recall correctly, Substack autosizes in-article images that are too wide down to the width of the article. I would start with a width of 1080 and experiment with the height from there.
I'm having the issue that my thumbnail looks centred in some views, and then skewed in others. I'm not sure what dimensions to create in canva so it is consistently in the right size and orientation. Any tips?
Go into your publications Settings and scroll down to the Website section. Change the setting for "Image cropping for post thumbnails" from Smart Cropping to Centered. Substack is weird with thumbnail centering, so let me know if it solves you issue or not!
Post layout options no longer includes "Groups" and now offers "Feature". The feature image sizes seem to be identical to the "Highlights" hero/header section.

PHEW--glad that's all it was! My pleasure!
My word mark is going behind the subscribe button in mobile view. I found an old post on reddit about it but didn't find a solution, anyone?

I want to make custom titles and page breaks in Adobe Express what sizes should these be?
I’ve seen some fancy page breaks but can’t figure it out!

it seems to help if you go by Substack's guidelines, and then maybe play with Center or Smart Cropping as mentioned in this thread
Social / post preview image: We recommend at least 1456 x 1048 px, but 420 x 300 px is the minimum. 14:10 is the aspect ratio for the preview images.

Thank you! I just switched it and will see how my next post comes out
How do I make an image smaller? Clicking on the arrows on the bottom right corner do nothing.
The most reliable way to cleanly edit an image's size is to use an app like Canva.

what is the best size image for posting in notes?
